PHAIDON DESIGN CLASSICS: THE DESIGN ENCYCLOPEDIA

PHAIDON DESIGN CLASSICS

The Phaidon publishing house has gathered in three volumes its work Design Classics compendium of the 999 better designs of an ample variety of objects from chairs to cars happening through coffee pots and a long etc until arrived at 70 different categories. It gathers designs born in the last two hundred years. Between the designers they honor mythical architects like Le Corbusier, Eames, Breuer or creators like Achille Castiglione or Antonio Citterio. One has really been to select those objects that are outstanding to remain in the time thanks to their aesthetic beauty, its formal puridad and for its materials. This selection has been made by prestigious architects, journalists, designers and critical.

Here the eternal question arises from which are those keys that cause that a design remains immutable to the passage of the years. Without a doubt one is that object that far from being obsolete stays as a classic one. A good example is the Panton chair that when observing seems it an object of recent creation and nevertheless it is already almost fifty years old. The Apple
company is expert of the important thing that is a good design in products and Steve Jobbs takes care of to the millimeter all the details combining with masters an excellent software with icons like ipod or mac, with Jonathan Ive designs.

Agree with you about Apple being rather iconic - the Museum of Modern Art in New York is practically filled with them! But I wish you hadn't posted a picture of the Mac Mini. It's nice, to be sure - but, like the designers said, it was never a problem for any manufacturer to shoehorn the innards of a mid-specced laptop into something relatively small. Now, the highly unpopular G4 Cube on the other hand, now that was a startling piece of design...

All relaxed now :-) Now, I'm waiting for an extended post on Steve Job's signature black t-shirt/polo neck and jeans. And his untrendy trainers.
